Tha Alkaholiks were quite unique when they came out. They came out amidst an era of gangsta rap, gang colors, 187s, blunt smoking and misogyny. Rather than all of that, Tha Liks were Cali cats that rapped about drinking. THAT'S IT. Yeah, they ain't alternative like Hieroglyphics or the Pharcyde, but they weren't trying to be Snoop Dogg either. Let's get onto the review. King Tee's protogees' brand of party rap is a lot more refreshing to hear than your Lil' Ice Cream. Y'know why? One: Tha Alkaholiks can actually RAP. Two: No doubt Lil' Ice Cream would've conformed to the scatalogical shit that Lil' Jon made popular just because he's from Atlanta. In fact, he don't even have to be from Atlanta (I'm talking to YOU, Mims and Fat Joe). Tha Liks were daring enough to avoid the obligatory 187s and "bitches ain't shit" lyrics delivered in that lazy drawl. Along with King Tee (and even Souls of Mischief), they brought the lyrical East Coast style of rapping to the West. In short, the raps are tight. The production on 21 & Over introduces you to a cat named E-Swift. It's tight, but it took me a while to get used to, since I heard Coast II Coast first. If you hear Coast II Coast before 21 & Over, the production on the latter's gonna sound like some late '80s shit that Finesse, Rakim, and Kane rapped on. Nonetheless, it's tight. The biggest problem I have with this is that I unfortunately heard Coast II Coast first, which sounds damn near ten years ahead of 21 & Over. Besides the production, I just feel that Tha Liks executed their style of rap better on Coast II Coast. But I'm not mad at 21 & Over. I'm glad this came first. Hip-hop fans will enjoy this, especially if they haven't heard Coast II Coast. To y'all that like J-Kwon's "Tipsy", here's some REAL drunken party rap. Non-fans will choose to hate these guys by some double standard. This was merely an introduction to Tha Alkaholiks, who was a group willing to do their own thing (even if it's getting drunk) rather than jumping on bandwagons (J-Ro threatened to bomb the next person that imitated Das EFX). Song Quality: 8.5/10 (who else can get away with liquor rap??) Lyrics: 9/10 (good raps for being drunk) Beats: 8/10 (good start for E-Swift) Favorites: Likwit Only When I'm Drunk Last Call Turn tha Party Out Bullshit Make Room Who Dem Niggas Least favorites: none
